GitHub Copilot X Is Now Powered By GPT-4
GitHub Copilot X is powered by OpenAI's GPT-4 and turns natural language prompts into code suggestions.
"Accelerate your coding, concentrate on your business strategy, and prioritize what's truly important: creating exceptional software."
This is the promise of the latest upgrade to GitHub Copilot, now enhanced by the power of GPT-4. The new AI programming assistant is now being referred to as "Copilot X" by GitHub.
What is GitHub Copilot?
GitHub Copilot turns natural language prompts into code suggestions across dozens of programming languages.
It is powered by OpenAI Codex, a generative, pre-trained language model created by OpenAI.
For example, if you write the function "max_sum_slice," Copilot will provide several code suggestions, saving you time to implement.
That’s pretty cool, right?
What’s new?
GitHub is not only adopting OpenAI’s new GPT-4 model but is also introducing chat and voice and bringing Copilot to pull requests, the command line, and docs to answer questions on your projects.
Here are the new features you can expect in Copilot X:
GitHub Copilot Chat
Copilot for Pull Requests
AI-generated answers about documentation
Copilot for the command line interface (CLI)
Let’s explore each feature.
1. GitHub Copilot Chat
Copilot Chat is more than just a chat window; it understands the code written by a developer, recognizes error messages, and is deeply embedded within the IDE.
Developers can access detailed analyses and explanations of code block intentions, create unit tests, and even receive suggested bug fixes.
2. Copilot for Pull Requests
Don’t know what to write on your pull request description?
Copilot can help you with that.
The tags are automatically filled out by GitHub Copilot based on the code changes. Developers can then review or modify the suggested description.
3. AI-generated answers about documentation
Copilot for Docs is a cutting-edge tool designed to assist users via a chat interface with inquiries regarding documentation.
It’s like having ChatGPT right within GitHub.
4. Copilot for the command line interface (CLI)
Let’s be real: even the most proficient programmers sometimes forget the syntax of many commands.
Copilot can compose commands and loops and throw around obscure find flags to satisfy your query.
How much is it?
Copilot X is not yet available to everyone. GitHub is gradually rolling out the new features via a waitlist.
Head over to this link to explore the features and get access to the technical previews.

Final Thoughts
Overall, I am impressed with all the features that GitHub has added to Copilot X.
GitHub’s Copilot X has exceeded expectations with its comprehensive features, writing 46% of the code and accelerating developer productivity by up to 55% within two years.
Though I am still on the waitlist, I eagerly anticipate experiencing its capabilities firsthand.
